Recurring Events

September and October

Great Country Farms (Bluemont, VA, near Leesburg) offers reservations for socially distanced, outdoor fun on their 12 acre farm. Pick apples, pick pumpkins (after September 21), feed goats, navigate a corn maze and more. A restaurant and picnic grounds is on the premises. Live music and farm demonstrations on weekends. Sundays, September 6, 13 and 20

Virginia Chamber Orchestra “Music in the Garden” series at Meadowlark Gardens, 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. Free but admission to Meadowlark Gardens is required. Vienna, VA.

Wednesday, September 23 – December 7

Fall Virtual Scavenger Hunt. McLean, VA. Assemble a team of four to ten players and a Team Captain (the Captain must be 16 or older) to compete against others and win prizes in this free event. The game is played on a smart phone in which teams complete 75 missions (or challenges) both indoors and outdoors . Missions include answering questions, taking specific photos or video, finding a specific item, geocaching or completing specific tasks as given in a list provided by the Game Master. The scavenger hunt will take place in and around McLean, VA and from your own home.

  • Reston “Fall Fun” Kids Camp in a Box (order now for delivery between October 12 and 30). The box contains a nature activity, arts & crafts, a science experiment, no bake cooking, a rainy day project, a family adventure, fitness fun and a link to connect virtually with camp staff during “Camp Connection.”$30 plus shipping if sent outside of Reston.

Monday, September 21

  • 55+ Activity Box Delivery (order ahead) This fall-themed box for older adults includes a nature activity, a craft, a science experiment, no bake cooking, a rainy day project, a family adventure, fitness fun and a link to connect virtually for coffee or happy hour. $30 (plus shipping if outside of Reston).
  • 55+ Fall Gardening and Getting Ready for Winter. Free Virtual Class presented by Arlington Recreation and Parks. Register.

Tuesday, September 22 – Fall Equinox

  • Autumn Equinox Fall Hike. Huntley Meadows Park and Visitor Center, Alexandria, VA. 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. $8 – Adults.

Wednesday, September 23

Saturday, September 26 National Public Lands Day

  • Free admission – Great Falls Park, Shenandoah National Park
  • Stills and Cider. See a cider press, taste (non-alcoholic) cider and listen to live music. Colvin Run Mill, Vienna, VA. Noon – 2 p.m. Ages 3 and up. $10.
  • Fall Family Campout. Includes night hike, movie, naturalist talk, boat ride and fishing. Burke Lake Park. Burke, VA. 2p.m. – 11 a.m. next day. $78/Family.

Thursday, October 1 – Mid-Autumn Festival, Harvest Moon, Hunter’s Moon, Nat. Pumpkin Spice Day

  • Park in the Dark: Harvest Moon Hike. Learn about the phases of the moon. Gulf Branch Nature Center, Arlington, VA. 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Free but registration required. Ages 3 and up.

Saturday, October 10

  • Fall Foliage Kayak Expedition. Enjoy fall colors at the lake. Previous kayak experience is necessary. Kayak provided. Lake Accotink, Springfield, VA. 8 a.m. Ages 13 and up. $42.

Sunday, October 18

Adapted Nature Hike. Barcroft Park, Arlington, VA. Register in advance.

Wednesday, October 21 – National Apple Day

  • Fall Foliage Kayak Expedition. Enjoy fall colors at the lake. Previous kayak experience is necessary. Kayak provided. Lake Accotink, Springfield, VA. 8 a.m. Ages 13 and up. $42.
  • Make a Scarecrow. Bring old clothing to stuff wit hay. Sully Historic Site, Chantilly, VA. 10 a.m., 11:30, 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Ages 5 and up. $20/family
  • Reptiles and Evening Wagon Ride. View reptiles, play games, wagon ride through the woods, s’mores, stories and campfire. Elllanor C. Lawrence Park, Chantilly, VA. 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Ages 4 to adult. $10.

Sunday, November 8

  • Sketch Hike: Fall Color. Take a hike and learn how to draw an autumn scene. Materials included. Huntley Meadows Park. Alexandria, VA. 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Ages 10 – Adult. $15.

Monday, November 9

  • Michael’s Crafts Live Online Class: Fall Fondant Cookies. A Wilton instructor teaches how to create hand-crafted edible place cards for fall gatherings. Learn how to transform balls of fondant into acorns, pumpkins and corn, along with cutting out flower petals and leaves.
